Therma-Tru Window Replacement: The Ventura Owner’s Guide
We replace Therma-Tru windows in Ventura every week, and the installed cost typically runs $450 to $1,150 per window depending on size, glass package, and frame condition. Most single-unit replacements take us 2 to 4 hours once the window is on hand, and we stock common Therma-Tru-compatible sashes and hardware on the truck so we can often swap a failed unit the same day. You’ll usually know something’s wrong when the sash won’t seat, the crank turns without moving the glass, or you feel a draft that wasn’t there last season.
Juniper Windows Ventura is an independent service provider. We’re not affiliated with Therma-Tru, but we install and service their products often enough to know exactly which parts fail and why.
Which Therma-Tru Models This Applies To
Therma-Tru builds entry doors and a line of vinyl and fiberglass windows sold under a few different series names. The most common units we see in Ventura are single-hung and sliding windows with vinyl frames, plus the occasional casement. The first thing we do on any replacement job is pull the sash and check the label sticker, usually on the top edge of the frame. That label gives us the serial number and the glass spec, which is how we match a replacement without guessing.
One compatibility gotcha with Therma-Tru: the balance system changed between production years. Earlier units used a block-and-tackle balance, while newer ones use a constant-force coil balance. They are not interchangeable, and installing the wrong type means the sash will either refuse to stay up or slam shut. We check the measurement from shoe to top channel and the stamp code on the old balance before ordering anything.
On the OEM versus aftermarket question: Therma-Tru’s own replacement parts are fine but often priced 40 to 60 percent higher than a quality equivalent. We use OEM parts when the frame is still under warranty, and aftermarket sashes or balances when the window is out of coverage and the homeowner wants to keep the cost down. Either way, the fit is dialed in the same way, and we stand behind the work with our 365-Day Done Right Promise.
Signs Your Therma-Tru Window Replacement Is Failing
- The sash won’t stay up. This is almost always a worn or broken balance. Constant-force coils lose tension over time, and block-and-tackle cords snap. You’ll feel the sash get heavier to lift before it gives out entirely.
- The crank turns but the window doesn’t open. On casement units, the operator gear strips after a few years of salt air and grit. Ventura’s coastal exposure is hard on the smaller moving parts, and the operator is usually the first to go.
- Water beads or streaks between the glass panes. That means the sealed glass unit has failed. In the Ventura climate, with hot sun on one side and cool marine air on the other, failed seals show up sooner than they would in a mild inland climate.
- You can see daylight around the sash edges. Weatherstripping compresses with age, especially on sliding windows that get opened and closed daily. The fix is usually new weatherstripping, but if the frame has racked, the sash needs realignment or replacement.
- The locks jam or won’t engage. Salt air corrodes the lock keeper and the strike plate over the years. When the sash shifts even a fraction of an inch, the lock points don’t line up anymore.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
Here’s what Therma-Tru window replacement runs in Ventura, installed:
- Sash-only replacement (same frame): $275 to $520
- Full window replacement (new frame and sash): $450 to $900
- Impact-rated glass upgrade: add $180 to $350 per window
- Balance or hardware replacement: $95 to $185 per window
The range depends on window size, whether the frame is sound enough to reuse, and the glass package you’re rebuilding to. Every job gets a written price before we start, and the number on that sheet is the number you pay. No change orders at the door. The labor and parts on any replacement are covered for 365 days, in writing.
DIY or Call Us?
Here’s the honest split. A homeowner can safely check a few things: look for the label sticker, note whether the sash moves freely, and check for cracked glass or separated weatherstripping. That kind of diagnostic work costs nothing and helps us bring the right part on the first visit.
What we don’t recommend is pulling the sash apart yourself. Vinyl frames flex, the balance systems are under tension, and one wrong pry with a flathead can crack the frame channel and turn a $300 sash swap into a full unit replacement. If the window won’t close at all, that’s also a security issue in a ground-floor Ventura home. Call us at (559) 314-1305 and we’ll walk you through what to check over the phone, then give you a straight answer on the fix and the cost.
FAQs
Most Therma-Tru vinyl windows in our coastal climate last 15 to 25 years before the balances, seals, or hardware start giving out. The glass unit itself usually goes first, especially on west-facing walls that take the afternoon sun and salt air. A sash or balance replacement can easily extend the frame’s life another decade. Call (559) 314-1305 and we’ll tell you honestly whether yours is worth repairing.
Yes, in many cases. If the frame is still straight and the glass is intact, we can replace a sash, balance, hardware set, or weatherstripping without tearing out the whole window. The only time a full replacement makes more sense is when the frame itself is cracked, water-damaged, or so far out of square that a new sash won’t seat. Call us and we’ll walk you through what we see.
A sash or balance swap usually takes under an hour per window. A full window replacement runs 2 to 4 hours including clean-up and haul-off. We’ll give you a written timeline with the estimate, and we stick to it. To schedule, call (559) 314-1305.
We keep common balances, sash locks, and weatherstripping for Therma-Tru-sized openings stocked on our trucks. Anything unusual gets ordered the same day and is usually on site within a week. We also stock parts for PGT, CGI, and CWS windows, which matters if you have more than one brand in the house. Call us with your serial number and we’ll check availability before we schedule.
